In recent years there has been more and more attention on creating as safe an environment as possible in the hospitality industry.
We believe fully toughened glass provides a solution to this problem.
Fully toughened glassware has been strengthened across its entire body making the glass resistant to impact damage at all points of the glass. When it does finally break, it will break into small fragments making it impossible to cause serious lacerations. When the breakage occurs at any point of the glass, it sends a shock-wave throughout the entire body, forcing multiple breakages to occur, creating a series of tiny spider web fractures in all parts of the body. Just like a windscreen does.
Festival Glass has a fully toughened glassware range that we able to decorate using organic and UV printing inks that are fired at a low temperature enabling glass-washer resistance up to 500 washes but not scratch resistant like the traditional decorating process.
Festival’s fully toughened glassware range once decorated will provide an ideal solution for any requirement so the perfect serve never has to be compromised.
Our fully toughened range is supplied with single colour decoration only, this includes our most popular process, etch effect. Toughened glass can also be supplied with bespoke nucleation for better head retention.
We use these inks when decorating either toughened glass or polycarbonate products. The inks are brighter than the usual thermoplastic inks we use. We have a standard range of colours to choose from, but each colour holds its own minimum order, our sales team will advise if you have any further questions.
Organic low firing inks
We use organic low firing inks which are fired at 280 degrees through the furness rather than 600 degrees which is the temperate our usual decorating process involves. We use these inks when decorating either toughened glass or polycarbonate products. The inks are brighter than the usual thermoplastic inks we use. We have a standard range of colours to choose from, but each colour holds its own minimum order, our sales team will advise if you have any further questions.

Toughened glass Q & A
What is toughened glass?
Toughened glass is glass that has been heated to a very high temperature and then cooled down rapidly. This produces glassware that is more resistant to mechanical and thermal shock than an annealed product.
Why choose a toughened product rather than an annealed one?
Toughening or tempering is a manufacturing process, which increases the durability of the product.
Toughened items can last 10 to 50 times longer than an annealed item. When the item breaks it will break into smaller, nearly blunt pieces, increasing safety.
What change in temperature can a toughened glass withstand?
A toughened glass can withstand changes in temperature of more than 135C an annealed item can only withstand a change in temperature of around 75C. This type of breakage is called thermal shock.
Is a toughened product more expensive than an annealed product?
Toughened products may be up to 30% more expensive than annealed products; however as the breakage of toughened products are far less than standard products the cost of replenishment is much reduced.
Can you decorate logos on to toughened glass?
Yes we are able to decorate in 1 Colour Only Organic Inks here in the UK.
Normally a white or etch print.
We use organic Inks as the firing temperature is only 130 degrees to bake the design onto the glass thus the glass is still toughened. When we fire normal glass enamels in the traditional way on to toughened glass we need to fire the glass at 630 degrees thus essentially ‘burning the toughening off’.
Is the decoration still permanent?
Yes. It can withstand up to 500 cycles and more in an industrial glasswasher however it’s worth taking note that the decoration isn’t has durable as traditional glass decoration.
Can you print more than 1 colour?
At present we are unable to decorate more than one colour in the UK, although we are able to decorate at the factory in Europe, we can print up to 8 colours, the minimum order for this is 10,000 pieces per design and glass shape.
