What is Toughened (tempered) glass?
Toughened glass is a type of glass that has been specially strengthened during the manufacturing process to improve its durability and resistance to impact and thermal stress and improved fragmentation when the glass breaks. This is achieved by rapidly heating the glass to a high temperature and then cooling it quickly, a process which alters the internal structure and behaviour of the glass when compared with standard, non-toughened glass.
Although no glass is completely unbreakable, toughened glass is designed to break differently from standard glassware. In the event of breakage, it typically shatters into much smaller, less hazardous pieces rather than large sharp shards. For this reason, toughened glassware is often considered a suitable option for busy bars, restaurants, and hospitality environments where glassware is handled frequently and occasional breakages may occur.
